Our Transport Projects

Upgrade of National Route N2 Murchison to Marburg Interchange

Upgrade of National Route N2 Murchison to Marburg Interchange

Client: South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL)

Location: Murchison, KwaZulu-Natal, RSA

Upgrading of National Route 2 Section 22 from Murchison (km 18.6) to Marburg Interchange (km 29.3). Safety features were improved along the route, including added lanes and median barriers over certain sections, along with protected sidewalks for adequate pedestrian accommodation.

St Helena Airport

St Helena Airport

Client: Basil Read / St Helena Government; DfID (British Government)

Location: St Helena Island, Atlantic Ocean

Phase 1 of this greenfield project covered the design, construction monitoring and certification of a new airport, plus appurtenant works on Prosperous Bay Plain to support Code 4D aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800W for passenger transport.

The scope included bulk earthworks; PQC aircraft pavements built to ICAO standards with structural capacity for Code 4D aircraft to UK MoD and FAA standards; civil and structural works, aeronautical ground lighting and navigational aids; surface and foul water drainage, sewage treatment, water supply and fire-fighting facilities; a 14.5km connector road to Rupert's Bay along with haul roads and parking; a 2,500m² terminal building with cargo facilities, a fire station and an ATC tower; a 6 million litre bulk fuel storage facility at Rupert's Bay; and communication systems, fencing and security.

Gautrain Rapid Rail Link

Gautrain — Rapid Rail Link

Client: Bombela Civils Joint Venture

Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng, RSA

Appointed by the Bombela Civils Joint Venture, in association with WS Atkins International, for preliminary and detailed design of the South-North section. As part of National Transport Development and preparation for the 2010 World Cup, 55km of standard-gauge high-speed rail was constructed, including both above- and below-ground sections.

Structural engineering services covered temporary pedestrian and pipe bridges for utility relocation, construction of the below-ground rail elements, and implementation of tunnel ventilation.

Rehabilitation of Camps Bay Drive

Rehabilitation of Camps Bay Drive

Client: South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL)

Location: Camps Bay, Western Cape, RSA

Originally scoped as localised road widening to accommodate MyCiti buses, a geometric analysis of the proposed bus fleet led to the entire road being widened by 1.4m. The pavement design combined light rehabilitation with full-depth construction in the widened area — a flagship project for the City of Cape Town, being the first use of Reclaimed Asphalt as a high-quality road construction material.
